Hollywood Casino at Greektown history and current owners
Hollywood Casino at Greektown in Detroit (formerly known as Greektown Casino) opened on November 10, 2000. The construction lasted for almost two years and cost a whopping $200 million. The casino was built on the site of the former Trappers Alley shopping center in the Greektown neighborhood in Detroit.
The original owner of the casino was the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Millennium Management operated the casino for the first two years, but the tribe took over in 2002.
The first major renovation project on the site began in October 2006. As a result of the $200 million expansion, a 400-room hotel tower and 13-story parking garage were built in November 2007.
The following year, the casino expanded its gaming floor by 25,000 square feet. This time, a re-designed VIP gaming space was included. In November 2009, the casino added a new poker room and 25,000 square feet of meeting space.
Due to financial problems, Greektown Casino declared bankruptcy in May 2008. In 2010, Greektown Superholdings, Inc. bought the venue and then sold the majority of its shares to Rock Gaming three years later.
The owner of Rock Gaming (later rebranded as Jack Entertainment) decided to leave the casino business in 2018. Therefore, the casino and hotel were sold to Vici Properties and Penn Entertainment in May 2019 for a total of $1 billion.
As a result, the casino was renamed to reflect Penn Entertainment?s flagship casino brand ? Hollywood Casino. This name change came with design renovations that cost $30 million and spanned the entire venue.
In 2024, the casino management also began renovating the site?s hotel.
