Tropicana Atlantic City history and current owners
Tropicana Atlantic City as we know it today traces its origins back to 1981. Its first owner, Ramada, built the venue on the location of the former Hotel Ambassador. The 521-room hotel and casino named Tropicana Atlantic City had its grand opening on Nov. 23, 1981.
Tropicana underwent many structural and ownership changes over the following four decades. In 1989, Ramada sold the property to Aztar Corp. In 1995 and 1996, the corporation added a new hotel tower, West Tower, and renovated the casino floor, renaming the establishment Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City.
In 2007, Columbia Sussex bought Aztar Corp., making it a subsidiary and renaming it Tropicana Entertainment LLC. However, on Dec. 12, 2007, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission denied Columbia Sussex?s application for renewal of its gambling license due to noncompliance with regulations.
Eventually, the resort was declared bankrupt, and it was sold to Tropicana Entertainment Inc., owned by Icahn Enterprises. The new owner
s renovated most of the resort from 2012 to 2015, giving it a new face.
In 2018, Gaming and Leisure Properties bought Tropicana, and Caesars Entertainment leased it, becoming its operator. The company added The Chelsea hotel to the resort, connecting it with a sky bridge. In 2020, Tropicana joined Caesars Rewards, and the new owners continued renovations.
