BetStars is now live in New Jersey. Visit the BetStars Sportsbook mobile app here for full details.

The latest international brand to join the New Jersey online and mobile sports betting market is FOX bet Sportsbook, owned by The Stars Group, and sister brand to PokerStars.

The Stars Group has a partnership with Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino. BetStars now joins PokerStars in operating online under the Resorts’ regulatory umbrella.

BetStars is probably a pure online play in the market since Resorts is already partnered with SBTech for its in-casino sports betting. That deal included:

“Full omni-channel offering across all channels, with a focus on the on-property solution to provide a land-based solution for the future, leveraging the experience and vision that the partnership has to offer.”

Currently, it appears the app is only available on Android. However, it should eventually available for iOS and desktop soon. The sportsbook will shares an account wallet with PokerStars. This is the eigth online betting app to launch in the Garden State.

The shared wallet not only makes it easier for players to switch their betting between poker and sports, but also means that VIP points earned on both activities go into the same account.

BetStars features bets as low as $.01

BetStars will be offering a full suite of sports betting options right from the getgo. The SVP Strategy & Operations, USA at The Stars Group Matt Primeaux explained that BetStars will eventually offer:

“In-play wagering, bespoke accumulators, and livestreaming, as well as an ecosystem of free-to-play products and promotions and sports content, for dozens of sports, including professional and NCAA football, basketball, and baseball as well as horse racing, hockey, soccer, tennis and other sporting markets.”

At launch, there was no livestreaming. Nor were there some of the sports you might suspect, like horse racing and esports. However, the app did launch with in-game wagering in time for the Thursday night NFL game.

Even small stakes players can get in the action on BetStars, with minimum bets ranging from just $.01 to $.10.  These stakes are the lowest in the market.

Additionally, there are some promotions and games unique to the platform. One example is Spin & Bet, which is a riff on The Stars Group’s poker offering, Spin & Go. Bettors can gamble with a portion of their bet to spin a wheel and possibly win a shot a up to 10 times your regular payday. The game is only available on select events.

More on Spin & Bet from BetStars:

“Spin & Bet is the game-changing feature exclusive to BetStars where you can enhance your potential winnings by spinning a random multiplier. Choose an available bet type in the drop-down Spin & Bet section of the app, add it to your betting slip by clicking on it, enter your bet amount and click ‘Spin & place bet’. Your odds will then be multiplied by the result of the spinner.

To fund the enhanced odds jackpot, we deduct 10% from every Spin & Bet amount. Free Bets cannot be used, maximum bet amounts apply, and you may not cash out a bet placed using Spin & Bet.”

There are also several parlays and prop bets easily available on the front page where BetStars claims you get an OddsBoost with better odds than normal parlays.

BetStars gets its first outing in the US

The Stars Group introduced the BetStars brand in December 2015, but to date, it has only been used outside the US. The Stars Group added the brand to front the company’s expansion outside poker and into the world of sports betting.

Matt Primeaux commented:

“We have successfully launched the BetStars brand in many European regulated markets and we have invested heavily to create a premier global offering. Working with our longstanding partner, Resorts, we are really excited to introduce a brand-new consumer experience by bringing New Jersey fans closer to the sports and the teams that they love.”

Between the launch of the BetStars brand and its debut in the USA, The Stars Group has been on an acquisition trail that has seen it buy or at least buy a controlling interest in:

  • William Hill Australia
  • CrownBet Australia
  • Sky Betting & Gaming (SBG)

The SBG deal has yet to clear approval from the UK’s Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) but is expected to do so soon. The $4.7 billion deal was at least in part driven by the opportunities Stars sees in US sports betting.

While we’ve yet to see a multi-state deal like those between MGM and GVC, or William Hill and Caesars, The Stars Group is definitely on the lookout to leverage its online expertise in as many states as possible.

In Q1 of 2019 PokerStars will be launching online poker in Pennsylvania, in partnership with Mount Airy casino. Although each Pennsylvania casino is only permitted one online sports betting brand, Stars is expected to launch sports betting as soon as it can.
