BetMGM?s entry into the legal US sports betting market

BetMGM officially came to life in July 2018 via a deal between MGM Resorts International and Entain (as GVC Holdings), but the roots stretch back much further than that. MGM itself came to be in 1986.

In the 30+ years since that point, the company has evolved into a global hospitality and entertainment giant that is perhaps most well-known for its signature properties in Las Vegas. The company unveiled playMGM, an online casino and poker site, in New Jersey in 2017.

The following year, the company reached a deal with what was then GVC Holdings to form Roar Digital. The playMGM app rebranded as BetMGM and launched in New Jersey in 2018, soon after the state allowed legal online sports betting.

BetMGM has since expanded to a number of other states, including launching a BetMGM Colorado app and another in Pennsylvania in 2020. The BetMGM brand made its debut in Iowa, Arizona, Michigan, Mississippi, and Wyoming in 2021. New York,?Louisiana, and Illinois were the first new states for BetMGM in 2022, with Maryland following suit on November 23.?Ohio launched on January 1, 2023 and?Massachuset

On an overall basis, BetMGM is the third-largest sportsbook by market share, behind only DraftKings and FanDuel. The company has aggressively marketed its offerings while also engaging in a number of strategic partnerships on both a local and national level with teams, leagues and other big brands. Looking ahead, the arrow is clearly pointing up for BetMGM.
