Residents of and visitors to Frederick, Maryland have a new place to get some skin in the game. On Friday, Nov. 18, Betfred Sportsbook Maryland opened in a temporary location inside the Long Shot’s in Frederick.

Preparations are also underway on the permanent physical sportsbook location at Long Shot’s. Betfred has shared some details about when it plans to launch online betting in Maryland as well.

Betfred Sportsbook Maryland gets started in Frederick

According to a Friday press release, regulators in Maryland have given their final approvals and the sportsbook inside Long Shot’s is now open for business. To be clear, this is a brick-and-mortar operation accepting bets in person.

“Long Shot’s is very excited to bring both retail and mobile sports betting to Frederick County. We are thrilled to add not only jobs but also to support our state’s education fund. It will be a big win for everyone in Frederick,” said Long Shot’s CEO, Alyse Cohen.

She added, “Our s
tate-of-the-art permanent facility opening in early 2023 will be the first and only 100% woman-owned sportsbook in Maryland. It will also be the only sportsbook in the entire region. We look forward to welcoming everyone soon.”

The eventual permanent location for this sportsbook will encompass 6,000 square feet and feature game-day viewing with beverage and food service. Currently, the online portion of Betfred’s operations in Maryland is not available.

That could change in the coming months, though.

Betfred targets an early 2023 online launch

As the press release alludes to, Betfred also received license approval for its online sportsbook this week. Some of the new licensees, such as DraftKings, plan to start taking bets online as soon as Wednesday. Betfred has a longer lead-in time.

The press release mentions an “early 2023” target for the launch of Betfred’s app in Maryland. Whether that means the app will be available for Super Bowl LVII or March Madness 2023 is uncertain.

What is clear now, however, is that Betfred now has a foothold in Maryland via its partnership with Long Shot’s.
