Iowa Casino Revenue Up 4% Year-over-Year In January 2023

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) reported Iowa casino gaming revenue for table games and slot machines for January 2023.

According to the report, Iowa casinos generated more than $136 million in adjusted gross revenue. That’s a 4% YOY increase from the $130 million generated in January last year. Just like during previous months, slot machines were the biggest revenue generators for all the casinos in the state.

Iowa generated over $27 million in state taxes.

According to the IRGC’s latest report, 19 brick-and-mortar commercial casinos generated $136,091,678 in adjusted gross revenue. Most of that money came from Iowa slot machines. Specifically:

  • Table game revenue was $14,243,631
  • A massive $121,848,047 came from slots

The commission reported over 1.3 million admissions on 456 combined table games and 14,698 combined slot machines.

While Iowa casinos contributed to the $27,090,276 state tax, $1,056,626 went to the state’s endowment fund. Another $264,157 went toward the state’s miscellaneous fund.

Out of 19 Iowa casinos, 12 gaming venues had over $5 million in adjusted gross revenue. Only four casinos managed to exceed $10 million in adjusted gross revenue. These are:

  1. Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino
  2. Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs
  3. Ameristar Casino
  4. Riverside Casino and Golf Resort

Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino had the highest adjusted gross revenue from casino games nearly $18.4 million. The casino generated over $16.5 million from slot machines and $1.87 million from table games.

The next most successful Iowa casino in monthly gaming revenue, Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs, generated $16,023,589. While $13.18 million came from slots, more than $2.84 million came from table game revenue.

Ameristar Casino followed with $14,393,439. Out of that amount, more than $12.5 million in revenue came from slot machines. Meanwhile, the casino’s table games revenue was just over $50,000.

The fourth-highest revenue earner, Riverside Casino and Golf Resort generated $10,021,225 in January. The casino got a little over $9 million in slot machine revenue, with an additional $1 million in table game revenue.

Although not exceeding $10 million, Rhythm City Casino was the fifth most successful revenue generator, with $8,936,296 in adjusted gross revenue. While $8.05 million in revenue came from slot machines, the casino got another $900 thousand from table games.
