The Fortune Stacks slot machine lets players follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo in a search for the secret treasures of the Far East. Konami uses Chinese-inspired artwork to take players right to the old imperial court.

Action Stacked Symbols are ready to shower riches down onto players, and the lucky ones will get to see the multiplier filled bonus round. Unfortunately, it can be quite a trek to actually see these riches.

Appearance & Highlights

This free slot machine uses a mixture of artwork that’s generally inspired by Chinese culture. The background is a fairly plain, red setting with a few lights thrown in for flair. The reels are framed in gold with a dark, red background to make the symbols easy-to-read.

The symbols themselves are meant to evoke the treasures of the imperial court. There are golden pigs, golden dragons, bags of coins and small Bonsai trees covered in gold coins.

The Emperor’s face acts as the wild symbol, and a large golden vessel is the bonus symbol. There’s also a lucky cat, because who doesn’t like them?

Note that a few symbols do animate on wins. The Emperor smiles as coins flow out from behind the space and the lucky cat waves.

In general, the game is lacking in some of the finer details and polish that would help with the theme. The lower value spaces are fairly standard card symbols with simple cutouts of “A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9” included.

There’s also not much music or sound to create a unique experience. The general game has no music and just a few basic chimes and clicks, with an out-of-place orchestra to signal a big win.

During the bonus game there are a few themed sounds, with a light Chinese instrumental soundtrack and an announcer who can shout out “Fortune Stacks” or “Great Fortune” for big wins. Overall, the theme feels a little lacking.

Fortune Stacks: Core Gameplay

The Fortune Stacks slot machine is a five-reel penny slot using three rows. There are 30 paylines and players have to play all 30 for every spin. There is no additional bet for the bonus features though.

All matches have to be made left-to-right. The lower value symbols need at least three-of-a-kind to trigger a win, but the lucky cat, dragon and pig will pay for just a pair.

The Emperor’s symbol acts as a wild space and can substitute for anything except for the bonus symbol. Note that wild symbols only appear on the second, third, fourth and fifth reels.

Like many of Konami’s slot machine games, this one features Action Stacked Symbols. Before each spin, sections of the reels are picked for replacement.

One symbol, which can be anything except for the bonus symbol or the wild symbol, is picked to replace whatever was previously in the selected spots.

There’s no guarantee that they will end up in play, and even if they do show up there’s no guarantee of a win. With a little luck though, these will pack the spin and set up a bunch of long combinations across multiple paylines.

Sadly, Konami captures some of the worst parts of a journey to a faraway land with Fortune Stacks. It can be a very long and boring game.

It’s not surprising that the three-of-a-kind wins don’t pay above break even. They exist to help break up losses and keep things interesting between the bigger wins. The problem is that they can be surprisingly hard to trigger.

With no wild symbols in the first reel, or even in any of the Action Stacked Symbols, the reels can be dry for long stretches.

The game is basically built around a long, string of losses broken up by a suddenly packed normal game or the bonus game.

The Bonus Free Spins Round

The Fortune Stacks online slot includes a separate free spin bonus round that’s triggered by getting at least three of the bonus symbols anywhere in one game. It operates off of a scatter win, so the three spaces don’t have to be on the same payline.

Getting three bonus symbols awards the player with five free spins. Getting four nets 15 free spins, and five symbols award the maximum of 30 free spins.

There’s also a scatter win payout, with three, four and five bonus symbols paying out respectively 5x, 15x or 100x the total bet on the spin. A set of five bonus symbols offers the highest single payout in the game.

The free spin round has a few big differences from the main game.

First, getting ju
st two bonus symbols anywhere during a free spin is enough to trigger a win and add three free spins to the counter. Getting more bonus symbols will trigger the usual win and also award more free spins.

The bigger bonus is the special twist on the Action Stacked Symbols.

During a free spin, one or two reels will be picked to have their section of Action Stacked Symbols upgraded with a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier. If these special symbols manage to form paylines, they’ll multiply the entire line’s payout by that amount.

If the player is lucky, and the other reels also fall on their Action Stacked Symbols, then there can be a lot of simultaneous, multiplied payouts to form a big jackpot.

Our Final Thoughts

The Fortune Stacks slot machine is a game that’s made for a fairly specific player. Anyone who wants a shot at a bonus round that can stack up in really crazy ways will like this game.

The competitive 96.09% RTP also will please more serious players. In spite of the high RTP, the experience is competent but fairly basic.

The theme feels minimal and the lack of crazy wilds or anything else to do much to shake up normal spins makes the game wear a little thin. Players who don’t love the big multipliers in the bonus round may want to look for more interesting slots.
