Celestial Sun Riches Design & Appearance
Konami did a wonderful job with the visual design of Celestial Sun Riches. As players might guess, the theme is based around the Celestial Sun and various nature symbols.
The background is a dark purple sky, which contrasts well with the black and gold reels to keep them readable.
The symbols include pine cones, acorns, elk, birds, bears, the Celestial Sun and an eclipse for the wild symbol. Each of these symbols is done in a beautiful design that has a 3D look and a wonderful etched texture. It makes everything feel rich, detailed and old.
Unfortunately, the game does use generic “A, K, Q, J and 10” card symbols for the lower values. They stick to a generic design that doesn’t clash with the other symbols, but it also doesn’t go with them very well.
For the finer details, there are a few nice animations to keep the game lively. The wild and Celestial Sun bonus symbols both animate to do little 3D dances when they’re in a winning payline.
The rest of the symbols just flash in place during a win, which is a little disappointing. Similarly disappointing is the lackluster sound design.
While there’s a really nice Celtic-inspired background song for the bonus round, there’s no music for the normal spins. All you hear are the standard clicks and bells from a slot machine, only broken up by the occasional sound-byte of the Sun laughing or calling out a nice set of wilds.
A little more work on the music, sound and animations would have been nice, even if it’s a not a deal breaker.
Celestial Sun Riches: Core Gameplay
The basic gameplay in the free Celestial Sun Riches is fairly simple, even if it is different from many other conventional slot machines.
First, the design of the reels is a little different. There are 5 reels, but reels 2, 3 and 4 are Ultra Reels that extend up to be 4 rows tall. Reels 1 and 5 are still 3 rows tall.
Second, there are no formal, fixed paylines in the game. Winning sets still have to start on the leftmost reel and move to the right with at least one matching symbol in each reel, but the game is very flexible with payouts.
Because of this, the game does require a high minimum bet of 200 credits per spin.
There are wilds in the base game. These symbols can appear in reels 2, 3 and 4 and fill in for any symbol other than the bonus symbol.
The other big twist is that any wild symbol that appears on a reel morphs into either a 2x or a 3x multiplier for any winning set that it completes.
Wild multipliers do stack, so getting a few wilds in a set can lead to a big payday.
This setup provides some fairly intense gameplay. With a fair bit of money on the line for each spin, each loss can really start to stack and hurt the bankroll.
Obviously, the generous paylines ensure that there are some small, steady wins to stretch out the game. However, it takes a full set of 5 of the second highest value symbol to break even on the total bet.
The game really swings around the wild multipliers and the occasional good stacked spin.
It’s a game where a short losing streak can be completely turned around by getting a set of 5 to pay out 8x. The bonus wheel can also help turn things around and set up a huge win.
The Bonus Round
Celestial Sun Riches slot machine features a two-stage bonus round with a bonus wheel and free spins. During the main game, players can get Celestial Sun bonus symbols anywhere on the reels.
Getting at least 3 anywhere in the game is enough to start the bonus. Getting 3, 4 and 5 Suns gifts the player 7, 12 and 20 free spins respectively. There’s a slight twist though. Any bonus symbols that land in reels 2, 3 and 4 are upgraded into wheel bonus symbols. When the bonus round starts, players get to spin a bonus wheel for each upgraded bonus symbol that they have.
The bonus wheel has a number of prizes on it. Players can get straight credit rewards of 500, 750, 1,000, 2,000 or 5,000 credits multiplied by their bet multiplier.
There’s also a jackpot wedge that pays out 500x the total bet. Players can earn an extra 3, 5, 8 or 15 free games. There are also wedges that upgrade the wild multipliers in the free spins from 2x and 3x to 3x and 5x multipliers.
Note that if players have more than one bonus wheel spin and get the multiplier wedge on the first spin, it is not possible to stack the multipliers.
The corresponding wedges will be replaced with an extra credit prize and a 15 free games space. Once all the bonus spins are done, the game moves on to the free spins.
The free spins are fairly standard free spins. They start with a paytable based off of the bet that triggered the bonus round, but all wins in the free spins round are naturally doubled even before any wild multipliers are applied.
The bonus symbols can still appear during free spins and can retrigger the bonus round. The free spins also have a small replacement feature.
Before each spin, sections of each reel are marked for replacement. When the spin starts, a random symbol is chosen to fill the blocks.
There’s no guarantee that they’ll show up in the game, but it adds a lot of matching stacks to the reels to potentially set up some big wins. Note that it can truly be any symbol, with even wilds and bonus symbols in the mix.
Final Thoughts
Konami’s Celestial Sun Riches is a fun and entertaining casino slot game with a lot of great features going for it.
The wild multipliers and the open paylines keep the normal spins fun. It’s also great to see that despite including a bonus wheel and loaded free spins, the RTP is still a very competitive 96.1%.
The only real negative with the machine is the high minimum bet. Players have to have a fairly sizeable bankroll along with a tolerance for some pretty wild swings to be able to enjoy this game. If you can handle the risk, it’s a very solid choice.
