Online Sportsbooks In Maryland Could Launch Next Week

app launch maryland sports betting regulators

About two years after voters in the state approved the expansion of gambling, legal online Maryland sports betting could literally be just days away. Regulators in Maryland have decided on an earlier date for a crucial meeting that could enable the launch of legal online sportsbooks in Maryland before Thanksgiving.

If everything goes well, bettors in the Old Line State could be enjoying some free bets and other promotions with their pie and turkey. While there’s no firm date for a launch currently, that could change in this week’s regulatory meeting.

Maryland sports betting regulatory meeting bumped up

On Monday, the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) announced it is foregoing its prior scheduled Nov. 21 meeting. However, it is not pushing the meeting back. Instead, it has moved the meeting date up to Wednesday, Nov. 16.

This meeting follows the Maryland Gaming & Lottery Control Commission’s (MLGCC) October meeting in terms of its agenda items. During that me
eting, that body recommended over 20 online sports betting licenses for approval.

Similar recommendations from the SWARC would represent one of the final regulatory steps for online sportsbooks. At that point, the Maryland Gaming & Lottery Control Agency (MLGCA) would essentially be ready to award licenses.

At that point, license recipients would just need to undergo final testing. For those systems that pass inspection, the MLGCA could set a date for each licensee to start taking bets. While it’s possible that several online sportsbooks could launch simultaneously, there’s no guarantee that will happen.

At least one online sportsbook is already accepting account registrations on its app ahead of a full launch. That sportsbook is BetMGM. With this announcement, competitors could follow suit soon.

Which Maryland sportsbooks could launch next week?

Again, there’s no guarantee that any of the individual licensees that the SWARC will consider on Wednesday will be ready to actually start taking bets before Thanksgiving. It’s simply likely that at least one or some of them should be ready in time for Thanksgiving.

The list of contenders which already have recommendations from the MLGCC includes but isn’t limited to:

  • BetMGM
  • Betfred
  • betParx
  • BetRivers
  • Caesars
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • PointsBet

Right now, it’s possible that some of these operators could launch on Thanksgiving or even after the holiday. Each sportsbook will likely work to get live as soon as possible after receiving licensure, with welcome bonuses and special offers for new users in Maryland in tow.

Marylanders could begin taking advantage of such offers as early as next week. For residents who have been awaiting this event since November 2020 when they cast their votes, it will be a reason to be thankful.
