If there is a vote to authorize a Petersburg, Virginia casino, the city’s residents now have a good idea of what they would be voting on. The Cordish Companies, whom the city has partnered with on the project, have revealed the details of their plans.

The proposal details a $1.4 billion mixed-use development on the south side of the city. And it also lists the impact the development will have on the local region.

Petersburg, Virginia casino plans unveiled

The Cordish Companies publicized the plans for the development on Wednesday. The facilities will lie just off I-95 on Wagner Road on Petersburg’s south side.

The Cordish Companies stressed that the development of the area would occur in phases. The plans call for:

  • 670,000 square feet of space for poker, slots, and table games
  • 200-room hotel featuring 20 suites
  • Resort pool and fitness center
  • Retail sportsbook
  • Event center
  • Over a dozen dining and entertainment options

The Cordish Companies also state that the facilities would employ 1,500 people on a permanent basis. And it would create several opportunities to partner with local businesses.

The Cordish Companies said they want to prioritize giving those opportunities to diverse business interests as well. Although at present, this is all completely hypothetical.

The city needs to vote for casino to happen

In order for any casino to be developed in Petersburg, voters must approve such a project via referendum. In order for the city to hold such a vote, the state legislature has to approve a resolution allowing it.

There’s a complication as well. Potential casino developers in Richmond are aiming to hold a second referendum there. Should that succeed, it would effectively short-circuit a vote in Petersburg.

For now, the fate of this proposed casino lies in the hands of state legislators. Given the expressed interests of The Cordish Companies, it’s fair to assume they will be active in the state capitol.
