The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the biggest brand in poker. Every year news of the winner of the $10,000 buy-in Main Event goes around the world, bringing renewed interest and new players to the classic game.

WSOP is owned by another iconic American gambling brand; Caesars Entertainment. Surprisingly, Caesars missed the first internet poker boom in the 90?s, contenting itself with the huge boost in player numbers to its live events in Las Vegas.

After states began to legalize online poker, Nevada was the first state to deal a hand of legal online poker. Caesars got into internet poker when WSOP was the second poker room to enter the market with a launch on September 17, 2013.

Since then the WSOP poker room has become the largest in the US. It has no competition in Nevada after Ultimate Poker and RealGaming Poker shut down, and it is a market leader in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

WSOP welcome bonuses explained

Here are the generous welcome bonuses offered by WSOP explained in greater detail:

WSOP 100% first deposit bonus

When you’re ready to add funds to your account, you can take advantage of the 100% first-deposit match.

The minimum qualifying deposit to receive a bonus is $10. WSOP matches your deposit with a bonus of equal value. There is a maximum bonus of $1,000. You can deposit more than $1,000, but your bonus will only apply to the first $1,000. The money isn?t placed in your account immediately. You have to play before you get it.

At WSOP tables, you earn Action Player Points (APP) for your play. The points are based on the tournament fees you pay, or the rake at cash game tables. WSOP makes its revenues by charging for hosting the games. In tournaments, it adds a few percent to the buy-in. In cash games, it takes a few percent of each pot where there is a flop.

WSOP tracks the revenue you pay and awards you points for each dollar paid. WSOP explains it thus:

?In ring games, 2 APPs are awarded for every $1 in rake collected at the table. You’ll receive APPs based on your contributed portion of the rake for each hand played. Fractional APPs are awarded in the hundredths. In tournaments, you’ll receive 2 APPs for each $1 in fees paid. Fractional APPs will be awarded in the hundredths.?

Your first deposit poker bonus is released in $5 chunks. To release each $5, you must earn 50 APPs.

Example first time deposit bonus

  • Deposit $1,000
  • Receive 200 payments of $5 into your account
  • Each $5 goes directly to your account every time you earn a total of 50 APPs.
  • To earn 50 APPs you must pay $25 in rake at cash games or in tournament fees.

To put it another way, the first deposit bonus repays you 20% of the fees you pay to play online poker.

The full amount of the bonus must be cleared within 90 days. Each bonus payment is credited to your account within 72 hours according to the terms and conditions ? in practice, bonuses are credited almost immediately.

$100 in bonus play welcome bonus

The other part of the welcome bonus also rewards you based on your first deposit. This bonus comes as bonus play. Here’s hope much you get with your deposit:

  • $25 Bonus Play with $10-$250 deposit
  • $50 Bonus Play with $251-$500 deposit
  • $75 Bonus Play with $501-$999 deposit
  • $100 Bonus Play with $1,000 or more deposit

WSOP $100 Daily Welcome Freerolls

In addition to the other bonuses, WSOP offers all new players free tickets to seven freeroll tournaments. Freeroll means you pay nothing to play, but there is real prize money to be won. In this case, that means there is $100 credited to the prize pool by WSOP.

The freerolls run at 10 p.m. every night of the week and are restricted to new players. These events generally have small fields, so it is easier to win a bit extra to add to your new poker bankroll.

Note that tournament tickets can?t be kept for future freerolls. You get seven and must use them or lose them in the first seven days after you make a deposit.

WSOP benefits from network effects

WSOP is part of the All American Poker Network. Under the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), players from New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware can all play in the same poker room. As WSOP is the only poker room to offer poker in Nevada and New Jersey, it is currently the only poker operator able to take advantage of the MSIGA.

Also in the All American Poker Network is 888 Poker which provides the poker platform for WSOP. This is the same platform used for all online poker in Delaware. If Pennsylvania online poker sites and/or Michigan online poker join the MSIGA, WSOP players would benefit from having an even larger player pool.

There are big advantages from larger player pools for players. WSOP players play at the same tables as players from the Delaware poker rooms and players from 888. This means tournament guarantees can be larger, and more cash game tables run giving more choice of games and stakes.

Each site feeding players into the player pool retains its distinctive brand and promotions. In the case of WSOP, the link with its live tournament circuit and series events is strong. At WSOP Poker, there are always promotions offering entry to live events. Currently, there are satellite tournaments offering the prize of entry into the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas for only $10.

Win a WSOP bracelet online

The live WSOP events dominate the annual poker calendar. For many poker players, the ultimate symbol of success is a WSOP bracelet. Until a few years ago there was no way to get one of these prized trophies without visiting the WSOP in Las Vegas.

Now WSOP.com is the platform used for several online events that form part of the official World Series of Poker. You can now win a coveted bracelet from the comfort of your own home?as long as you are in one of the states where WSOP.com is legal, of course!

How to sign-up to play online poker at WSOP.com

Head over to WSOP.com now. Enter the WSOP code 25FREE to get your welcome bonus, register your account, and get started playing online poker.

If you want to play on your laptop or desktop, you must download the poker client. This is available for Apple and PC machines. To start playing on your mobile device you will need to download the poker app for either your iOS or Android device. If you don’t want to download an app there are great mobile gambling options available as well.

Once you have installed the software, you must create your new account by clicking the ?Register Now? button. This brings up the sign-up screen.

The personal details WSOP asks for are minimal and are necessary requirements set by the regulator before you can play for real money.

You don?t have to be in one of the states where WSOP is legal to establish your account. However, you may not play poker for real money unless you are located within the state borders of a state where WSOP is legal.

Since online poker is legalized at the state level rather than by the Federal government, the regulators insist that poker rooms use sophisticated geo-location software to make sure you are legally allowed to play.

This usually works by triangulating your position from WiFi networks, by using your IP address in conjunction with other location indicators, or taking data from cell phone towers. It is blindingly accurate.

If WSOP allowed you to play outside its regulated area, it would be breaking the law and subject to fines. Similarly, if you have a WSOP account in Nevada, you cannot use it to play poker in New Jersey, or vice versa. You must set up a new account in each state.

That dealt with, as soon as you are a registered customer, you are ready to hit the tables.

WSOP poker room traffic

Compared to the global poker rooms in the international market, no US poker room yet has high volumes of traffic at the tables. This is a consequence of state-by-state legislation.

WSOP stands out from the pack because it gets the highest traffic levels of all US online poker rooms. If Pennsylvania and/or Michigan is able to join in on the network effects enjoyed by New Jersey and Nevada, the numbers for all game types will be that much healthier.

Cash game traffic

The All American Poker Network gets up to 500 players at its cash game tables during peak hours. This is pretty impressive by US standards. PokerStars New Jersey peaks at about half that. The difference is the impact of both the MSIGA, and having two big brands?888 Poker is the other?feeding players into the same poker room.

WSOP has sensibly limited the stake levels and poker varieties it offers. Poker variants of Hold?em, Omaha and Stud are on offer, with stake levels running from $0.01/$0.02 through to $25/$50.

Other poker rooms offer more intermediate stake levels, for example WSOP doesn?t offer $0.02/$0.04 or $0.02/$0.05 level except in Stud games. Although this apparently restricts choice, in practice, the policy creates more active table at each of the stake levels that are offered. In other words it?s easier to find a seat when you want play.

WSOP online tournament traffic

Tournaments also
benefit from the larger player pool. More players mean more tournament entries which means bigger prize pools.

There are still no regular tournaments that offer seven figure prize pools. The $1 million+ guarantees available in the global online poker market aren?t offered regularly in the US. Of all online poker rooms in the US, the WSOP offers the biggest guarantees. These are in place every year for the online bracelet events as part of the live World Series of Poker.

In 2019 there were nine online bracelet events five of which pulled in over $1 million in prize money. The $400 event picked up 2,825 entries. That?s more than any other US online poker room gets at such a high buy-in.

The high tournament traffic is partly a natural consequence of the WSOP?s history in live events, but it is also a testimony of the quality of tournament structures. A lot of the fun in playing tournaments comes from the combination of factors including blind levels, starting chipstacks, time between blind increases and so on. At WSOP they know how to get these things right to benefit all players entering, not just the top pros.

WSOP poker games

WSOP games can be seen in the poker client lobby. When you first sign up for your account it is well worth exploring the lobby to find out all the options you have to play at WSOP.com.

The poker variants offered at WSOP Poker are:

  • No-Limit Hold’em
  • Fixed Limit Hold’em
  • Pot Limit Omaha
  • Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo
  • Fixed Limit Omaha
  • Fixed Limit Omaha Hi/Lo
  • Fixed Limit 7 Card Stud
  • Fixed Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo

The games are available for both tournaments and cash games.

Cash games at WSOP Poker

All the poker variants run as cash games, but No Limit Hold?em is by far the most popular. Cash game tables are distinguished by how many players can sit at each table. The more players, the tighter the game, the fewer payers, the more action.

WSOP offers tables with six or nine players for Omaha and Hold?em, or eight players for Stud. In spite of a tick box in the lobby offering to filter for Heads Up tables, WSOP doesn?t run specific two player tables. Of course, tables can get down to two players easily, so heads up play does take place even if there are no tables dedicated to it.

The stake limits for the games range from $0.01/$0.02 at 9-handed No Limit Hold?em tables through to $30/$60 at Fixed Limit Omaha Hi/Lo 6/9 handed tables.

The stake jumps between levels can be quite high, especially for beginners moving up from the lowest stakes No Limit Hold?em tables where the buy-in is $2. The next stake level is $0.05/$0.10 where the maximum buy-in is $10.

These might be nickel and dime games, but they still need a bankroll five times as large as the lowest stake tables.

Sit & Go tournaments at WSOP Poker

Tournaments have the great advantage that you know how much you are spending. There is a buy-in and that?s it. You don?t need to spend any more money. In cash games you can rebuy whenever you run low on chips. In a tournament when you lose all your chips you are out of the event.

Tournaments are convenient for people who want to control how much they are spending on their poker hobby. The problem with big tournaments is that they can last for several hours, and many players want to sit down for just an hour or so. Sit and Go tournaments (SNG) are the answer.

SNGs usually have only one table. The tournament begins when a table full of players have registered. With so few players, each SNG lasts only a short time. SNGs are a bit like playing only the final table of a big tournament, and the chances of winning some money are correspondingly higher.

WSOP Poker offers standard SNGs for two, six and nine players. There are normal speed and turbo versions where the blinds go up very quickly. A standard speed SNG takes around 45 minutes to finish, while a turbo can be over in less than half an hour.

The majority of SNGs are Texas No Limit Hold?em, but some PLO SNGs do run. Buy-ins range from $0.25c to $200, so there?s something for every budget.

SNGs are real poker, real tournament poker, involving all the strategy of a bigger event, but without the massive commitment of time. They can be a great way to learn tournament poker without spending much money, and offer a lot of entertainment value for the price.

Play online poker today & get up to $1,100 in bonuses at WSOP.com

WSOP Blast SNGs

For players who want even faster SNG action, WSOP offers ?Blast? SNGs. These are four-handed super-turbo SNGs with a twist. The prize pool is not pre-determined like other tournaments. Instead, a random process allocates a prize pool that can be from 2x the buy-in to 10,000x the buy-in.

The prize generator operates randomly but produces a standard distribution of prize payouts so there will be x% of prize pools of 2x the buy-in, and y% of each larger multiple. Of course, the 10,000x prize pools are rare, but incredibly exciting when they come along.

The games involve a lot of luck. If the game hasn?t finished within a set number of minutes, time runs out and the rest of the play is automatic. Every payer left in the tournament is automatically all-in until there is a winner!

Blast SNGs buy-ins are:

  • $0.10
  • $1
  • $5
  • $15
  • $30

So for $1 it?s possible to play for a $10,000 prize pool. No wonder Blast poker is one of the most popular games in the WSOP poker room.

WSOP multi-table tournaments

Multi-table tournaments are the gold standard of poker. A large field of players sits down with the same number of starting chips and plays until only one player has won all of them.

The WSOP brand gained its global recognition from tournaments, so it?s no surprise that that expertise has translated to its online poker room.

On Sunday alone, WSOP offers tournaments with a total of over $250,000 in guaranteed prize money. Tournament guarantees work very simply. WSOP guarantees that the prize pool will be a certain amount of money. Even if too few players register to make a prize fund that large, WSOP makes up the difference.

In online poker that amounts to free money, so finding yourself in a tournament that has ?missed? its guarantee means there?s a higher expected value for your original buy-in.

While the majority of tournaments don?t come with guarantees, the ones that do stand out from the schedule. They are very popular and it is rare for them to miss the guaranteed amount. You should see the guaranteed tournaments as an indicator of especially popular events or events with an extra incentive during less popular playing times.

The WSOP tournament schedule includes a regular selection of guaranteed events, many of which take place on Sundays.

WSOP regular guaranteed poker tournaments

  • Sunday $100,000 guaranteed–$320 buy-in?the WSOP flagship event of the week. There are daily freerol
ls which offer seats as prizes and satellite tournaments throughout the week.
  • Monthly Sunday $50,000 guaranteed?High roller event with a $1,000 buy-in
  • Sunday $30,000 guaranteed–$500 buy-in every week
  • Sunday $10,000 guaranteed–$100 buy-in
  • Sunday $8,000 guaranteed?There are two versions of this event, a Knockout tournament with a $75 buy-in and a PLO event with a $215 buy-in.
  • Saturday $15,000 guaranteed–$250 buy-in. The tournament schedule usually offers two big Saturday guaranteed events, a $10,000 guarantee and a $20,000 guarantee event. Currently only the $15,000 event is running.
  • Weekday events include daily $10,000 and $15,000 guarantees and since mid-week is a quiet time for online poker there?s a Tuesday Showdown with $30,000 guaranteed, with a $500 buy-in.

These events are supplemented with regular tournament series. During a tournament, series WSOP adds a number of guaranteed events plus extra prizes for players who do well in the series as a whole. Online series will run throughout the year.

WSOP Poker VIP Rewards

It costs online poker rooms a lot to recruit a new customer. Therefore, they tend to be particularly generous with the rewards they offer existing customers to keep them happy.

New players can be so enthusiastic about playing that they don?t notice the VIP rewards opportunities. That?s a mistake, as WSOP VIP rewards mean extra cash, regularly.

How WSOP Poker Rewards work

Whenever you play real money poker at WSOP.com sites, you will earn Action Player Points (APP). You earn two APPs for every dollar you spend in cash game rake or tournament fees.

These APPs are converted into WSOP points at a rate which depends on your loyalty level. There are four monthly levels and one yearly level. To qualify for a level you need to earn a certain number of points per month, or per year. Each level gives a different multiplier for your APPs.

Monthly levels

  • Player?no qualifying points and no multiplier
  • Bronze?200 APPs per month and 4x multiplier
  • Silver?750 APPs per month and 10x multiplier
  • Elite?1,500 APPs per month and 12.5x multiplier

There is one annual level: Champions Club.

To reach the Champions Club level you need to earn 20,000 APPs in a year. It gives a 16x multiplier.

WSOP Points convert to cash

WSOP doesn?t mess about with fancy options for its VIP club. The points you earn convert directly to cash.

The minimum number of points you can convert is 1,000. Every 100 WSOP points is worth $1.

Examples:

  • A Player level member earns 1,000 APP points. These convert to 1,000 WSOP points which can be exchanged for $10 in cash.
  • A Silver level member earns 1,000 APP points. These convert to 10,000 WSOP points?the 10x multiplier is important! 10,000 WSOP points convert into $100 in cash.

To convert your points, go to ?My Profile? in the poker lobby. Click on ?My Rewards,? and go to ?Convert.? Select the number of points you want to convert and the cash will instantly appear in your account.

WSOP customer support

WSOP offers an online FAQ where many simple questions are resolvable. For anything more complex there is an onli
ne form at the WSOP.com Support Center.

WSOP doesn?t offer a telephone support service.

Overall, reports are that the online help is responsive and generally effective.

WSOP promotions

The most profitable regular promotion WSOP offers is a monthly rebuy opportunity. This is slightly less generous than the welcome package bonus, but works in the same way. The promotion runs whenever the WSOP wants players to put a bit of extra money in their accounts, so just before major tournament series there is usually a rebuy promotion.

The February 2020 rebuy promotion offered a bonus match of 100% up to a maximum of $500.

Every week there is a Blast leaderboard which pays out $1,000 in prizes to players who have done well in the Blast SNGs. There?s a similar leader board promotion for standard SNGs also offering a weekly $1,000 prize fund.

Following the example of its live WSOP series, WSOP.com offers a single Player of the Year award. Only one person gets it, but it?s well worth winning. The prize goes to the best performing multi-table tournament player of the year. It consists of:

  • A cash prize of $10,000
  • Entry to the 25 Seat Scramble–25 seats guaranteed to the 2020 Main Event
  • Entry to a 2020 WSOP $500 Online Bracelet Event
  • Entry to a 2020 WSOP $400 Online Bracelet Event
  • A WSOP.com Player of Year ring (approximate value of $1,000)

WSOP changes its promotions every month, so we can?t list everything here. Typically, promotions are linked to seasonal themes and especially to the live WSOP which starts at the end of May every year.

WSOP poker rake and tournament fees

It costs a lot of money to run an online poker room. It is much more expensive than operating online casino games. Online poker is a peer-to-peer game meaning that players play against each other, not against the house.

In online poker there is no house advantage. The house doesn?t always win because it isn?t in the game to start with.

Instead, online poker rooms charge for the games they offer. The commission is known as rake, although for tournaments we talk about fees for each event. As a whole, the revenues earned by poker companies are known as rake. They are the price we pay to play.

Tournament fees are a percentage of the buy-in, and you can always see exactly what the fee is in the tournament lobby. Low stakes events have a fee of around 10%. If the tournament costs $100, then $9 or $10 of that price will be taken as a fee with the rest going into the prize pool.

The fee percentage is lower for turbo events and SNGs as well as high buy-in events.

Cash games take their rake from each pot that is played. The basic principle is ?no flop, no drop? meaning that no rake is taken unless a flop is dealt.

At that point, WSOP take a proportion of the pot. As more cards are dealt and more betting follows, the rake increases up to a limit. The rake cap is an important part of the pricing mechanism ensuring that no matter how deep players are, the maximum rake is limited for each hand. Exact rake figures can be obtained from the WSOP online poker website.

Conclusion

Excellent software, superb tournament structures and high levels of traffic at cash game tables make WSOP.com a great place for beginners and pros alike.

The WSOP brand is legendary in poker and with the support of Caesars Entertainment, you can expect the company to maximize its footprint in the US market.

As part of the All American Poker Network, WSOP offers extra benefits that single state poker rooms simply can?t match. And should Pennsylvania join New Jersey and Nevada in that network, WSOP’s competitive edge will grow even larger.
