How does Kansas regulate gambling?
Gambling in Kansas falls under the oversight of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. There are few forms of legal gambling in the state that are not subject to the commission’s oversight, including commercial casinos, sportsbooks and their apps, online horse betting and daily fantasy sports. The lone major exception is the Kansas Lottery, which maintains oversight over its own products.
Interestingly, all of the commercial casinos in Kansas are operated, in part, by the state itself. The Kansas Lottery is the official operator at each location, but it maintains partnerships with outside companies to assist with the operations themselves. Thus, in a sense, all of the commercial casinos in Kansas are government buildings, though still subject to Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission oversight.
However, one group that falls outside the KRGC’s gaze is the tribal casinos in the state. Because reservations and the tribes that live on them have a degree of sovereignty, each tribe’s gambling commission oversees its own properties. So, if you get into a dispute with one of the gambling operators, you’ll need to get in touch with the KRGC or the tribal commission associated with your choice of casino. The good news, though, is that the regulator should have the resources to help you.
Online casino gambling in Kansas
With online casinos still not legally available in Kansas, the options for legally playing online casino games through your laptop or mobile device are slim. Kansas lawmakers have made attempts in the past to argue that online casinos and gambling falls under the existing definition of gambling under state law, but those efforts have not borne fruit or gained much traction.
Instead, the best options for Kansans to bet without leaving their couches, coffee shops or car seats are the social and sweepstakes casinos that are active in the state. Kansas gambling history
Kansas has a long and storied history with regard to gambling. Tales of Old West saloons and gambling in places like Dodge City loop prominent figures like Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson into the state’s narrative.
However, Kansas went through a period of gambling inactivity in the early part of the 20th century. Until the introduction of bingo in 1974, no legal gambling was available in the state.
